Can't open php files on assets dir

I have a WordPress theme that has custom PHP files inside the assets directory. I need that the client-side can access those PHP files (for AJAX calls on it) like https://mywebsite.com/app/themes/my-theme/assets/custom/action.php

Looks like Roots bedrock blocks that somewhere and just keeps redirecting to the homepage, because on default WordPress I can access those files just fine with the browser.
