Install and Integrate NPM Packages into Sage 8 Asset Builder

Hey all, I have some dependencies for a project that aren’t available in Bower but rather via NPM. Are there instructions on integrating NPM modules into the Sage 8 asset flow or even switching the package manager from Bower to NPM?

Backstory: Reverting a site/theme using Sage 9 to Sage 8 due to concerns over stability of the beta release.

You can’t, asset-builder is specifically for Bower dependencies. asset-builder is also no longer maintained.
