We would like to start working on a theme using Roots and to push it to ThemeForest. We have asked directly Envato if they will consider such theme but unfortunately didn’t receive any answer… Considering their WordPress submission rules, there seems to be slight difference between their standards and Roots standards. Does anyone has such experience with ThemeForest or any tips what should be done in order to avoid possible problems?

Ok, we’ve got official answer from ThemeForest (took a while though). We are being said that we are welcome to use any WordPress framework if licensing is ok, should be checked with authors perhaps. Moreover, there seems be one theme released (approx. two weeks ago) that is claiming to use Roots as starter theme (you might find it in ThemeForest search).
LIcensing shouldn’t be an issue, Roots is licensed as MIT, which is basically a “do as you want” license. I don’t know if Roots has become really popular for Themeforest/Wordpress.org themes. Probably because most people that are using Roots are using it for one-off client projects.
